Humor, musings and Craft thoughts
Oly's Musings:
Sleep with a mirror under your pillow for 3 nights, the 3rd a Friday, and you will dream of your true love on the 3rd night. (Oly’s note: course, if you break the mirror, 7 years of bad luck?) Dream of kisses and you dream of treachery. Dream of birds and you dream of friends and fortune. To dream of a calendar is a sign of good fortune. Married in the merry month of June, life will be one honeymoon. If you touch your little finger and forefinger behind your 2 middle fingers, you can have any sweetheart you like. To cure a headache, lean your head against a tree and have someone else drive a nail into the opposite side of the tree. (Oly's note: make sure the nail is shorter than the diameter of the tree.) Another headache cure - rub cow dung and molasses on your temples. And yet another headache remedy - Soak your feet in hot water to draw blood from your head. Sinus trouble? Chew on a honeycomb to clear sinus passages. (Oly's note: NEVER give honey of any kind or in a product to a child under 18 months as it can be deadly.) The sun in your dream bestows favor and health to the sick. To make a wart go away: rub it with seven kernels of corn, then feed the corn to your neighbor's chickens. When to Cut Your Fingernails: Monday - Wealth, Tuesday - Health, Wednesday - News, Thursday - New pair of shoes, Friday - to cut Woe - Saturday - Journey to go, Sunday - cut them for Evil. Hiccup Cures by the Year: Sudden fear (1584), Sneezing (1626), Pull ring finger (1727) (Oly's note - Not the index finger as I hear this affects the other end of a person in a loud expulsion), Cover your head with a pillow, Spit on a rock, Hold your breath and stick out your tongue, Pant like a dog, Bite your thumbs and blow hard against them for a minute, Drink a glass of water with a pencil in your mouth, Eat a spoonful of peanut butter (Oly's note - perhaps best to try this one outside so you're not cleaning peanut butter off the walls in case it doesn't work), Eat a spoonful of sugar. My personal favorite is to drink water upside down. The color green helps soothe nerves and promotes general good healing. When sheep collect and huddle, tomorrow will become a puddle. If fowl roll in the sand, rain is at hand. Expect rain when a dog's tails straighten. Bats flying late in the evening foretell a fine next day. Cows give more milk and sea more fish when the wind's from the west. Wish on a Spring frog for good luck. There'll be one snow in the coming winter for every fog in August. Proverbs contradict each other. That is the wisdom of mankind. The Moon: Police crime records are said to be more numerous during the days of the full or new moon. Hospital records of patients bleeding are likewise said to increase during these days. Also it is believed there are more births recorded at new Moon. Also many don't visit their dentist or have operations during a new or full Moon time fearing increased bleeding. When the Sun, Moon and Earth are in a straight line (such as at full or new) their combined gravitational pull will produce a spring, or big, tide. At the time of the quarters, the Sun and Moon are 90 degrees apart, and we experience a neap or small, tide. If a woman sees a dove and glimpses the new Moon at the same time, repeat the following, "Bright Moon, clear Moon, Bright and fair, Lift up your right foot, There'll be hair." Remove your shoe and hair found will be the color of your future husband's. Full Moon is an ideal time to accept
a proposal of marriage.
The dark of the Moon is the best time for killing weeds, thinning, pruning. mowing, cutting timber; and planting belowground crops. When the new Moon falls on a Saturday, the following 20 days will be wet and windy. Moon and Weather - Waxing Moon is
sometimes called the right-handed Moon.
If the crescent Moon holds its points upward, able to contain water, it predicts a dry spell. If the new Moon stands on its points, expect precipitation to spill out. A winter full Moon is a time for long cold snaps. In April, it brings frost. 2 full Moons in a month increase the chance of a flood. A pale full Moon indicatesrain, a red one brings wind, and a Christmas full Moon predicts a poor harvest. A halo predicts wet or stormy weather. Count the number of stars visible within the halo to know the number of days before rain. Stars can also signify the number of days of rain. Moon and Witch - To become a witch fire a silver bullet at the Moon while spouting obscenities. Or, fire 7 bullets at the Moon and recite the Lord's Prayer backwards. (Oly's note - must have missed this initiation.) Monday is the Moon's day. Monday's are auspicious for peace and happiness, raising spirits of the dead, water activities and travel, home and family, dreams, meditation, cooking (but watch the salads), love spells, and reconciliation, learning the truth, clairvoyance, and becoming invisible. Doomsday - "Who cannot see that the world is already in its decline and no longer has the strength and vigor of the former times?" - Cyprian of Carthage, 250AD NOW, that you have read through these, let me reveal to you the source from which these ditties come. You won't find them all in one witchy book, nor in a trendy New Age over-priced calendar, or buried deep within a ceremonial magick text that reeks of pungent incense smoke... These and more can all be found in 'The Old Farmer's Almanac; A Millennium Primer; Timeless Truths and Delightful Diversions', by Time Clark and the editors of The Old Farmer's Almanac, copyright 1999, Yankee Publishing Incorporated.
